Chocolate Kiwi Cookies

These chocolate kiwi cookies are a delicious way to eat kiwi with chocolate and a surprise hint of coffee to bring out the flavor just enough.

They are a great somewhat cake like cookie that is perfect as a mild dessert.

While these cookies are not super sweet, they do have a kick of chocolate to it that will sate any chocolate craving you might have.

The kiwi adds a surprisingly good flavor  to the cookie and the slight bitterness of the coffee balances out the sweetness from the kiwi and the chocolate, making it a perfect blend of flavors as a little party in your mouth.

How these cookies came about

The other day I was looking for recipes to use up my kiwis but all the recipes I found just didn’t seem to sound like something I wanted at the moment.

So after spending some time thinking about what I could do, I decided to try making a cookie with kiwi chunks in it.

When I mentioned my thoughts to my family, it was met with with some confusion and lots of thoughts on how kiwis just didn’t seem to fit with a cookie.

But I decided that the worst that could happen is to have a messed up cookie.

At least I would gain some experience from it.

So I whipped up a thing of dough and added kiwi chunks.

It felt like something else was needed, so I decided to add some chocolate chips and then went for a bit of a stretch and decided to add some coffee grounds.

I think that may have been the best decision I could have made for these cookies.

My first attempt was pretty good but I realized I didn’t think to press the kiwis a bit so they were not so wet.

The second time I got the kiwis right but found out that more chocolate chips was the way to go.

By the third time, I think I got the recipe down.

At least, by the third round it was a hit with my family so I consider it to be a success.

Chocolate Kiwi Cookie Instructions

Begin by preheating the oven to 350.

kiwi

Cut and peel the kiwi and measure it out.

Lay the cut kiwi out on a plate that has cloth or paper towel on it and cover it with another cloth or paper towel.

Press the kiwi lightly but firmly and leave it to sit and drain while you make the cookie dough.

Combining the wet ingredients

melted butter

Melt the butter in a microwave safe bowl and pour it into your kitchen aid bowl or mixing bowl; whichever you decide to use.

Add the sugar to the butter and mix it together.

Add the vanilla and egg and mix together thoroughly.

Your batter should look like something similar to the picture below.

Set the liquid ingredients aside and begin working on the dry ingredients.

Combining the Dry ingredients

dry ingredients

Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt to the small mixing bowl and mix it all together.

If you are using a kitchen aid or mixer, slowly add the flour in as you are mixing.

If you are using a mixing spoon, pour some flour in and mix it completely before adding more in.

This way the flour will be mixed in well and it easier to keep it off of the sides.

It will also make it easier to to combine the ingredients and prevent your arm from complaining with all the stirring.

The next to pictures will show the process of how the dough will form as you mix in the flour a little at a time.

dough

This last picture is how your dough should look with all the flour mixed in.

Adding the chocolate, kiwi and coffee

Once your dough is ready, its time to add the coffee grounds and kiwi.

I have found that adding the coffee grounds first is the better way to go but when I took these pictures I just so happened to forget that step and put the kiwi in first.

So either way you do it will work, but if you put the coffee grounds in first you are less likely to smash the kiwi.

adding kiwi

It is very important that you mix the kiwi into the dough by hand and not with a mixer.

The mixer will mash up the kiwi and destroy the chunks, which we definitely don’t want.

adding coffee grounds

Once you have the coffee grounds and kiwi folded in, I would add the chocolate chips or chunks depending on what you prefer.

*Note here that I was apparently tired while making these as I also forgot to take a picture of the chocolate chips being folded in.

Baking the cookies

Using a spoon, or your hands, roll the dough into small to medium size balls and place on a cookie sheet with a space in-between each one.

I can usually get up to four cookies in a row.

Press the cookies down slightly if you would like the cookies to flatten out a bit.

I have found that these cookies don’t really “grow” in the oven so they will look just about the same way you made them when they come out of the oven.

Bake in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool for about 5 minutes.

Remove from the pan, serve and enjoy!

Store in a container with a lid for up to 4 days on the counter or 6 days in the fridge.

Notes and tips

*You can always add more or less chocolate depending on what you want,

You can also add one chocolate chunk to the middle instead of folding chocolate chips into the dough.

When I did the chocolate chunk in the middle, I liked to add a pinch of sea salt to it to bring out the chocolate flavor a bit more.

*You can skip “drying” the kiwi if you would like a slightly more moist cookie but just know that the cookie will not last as long as the kiwi will make the dough somewhat soggy a day or two later.
